Mathura, Sept. 5 -- As the clock struck midnight on Krishna Janmashtami, Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, was immersed in immense faith and joy.

According to religious beliefs, Lord Krishna incarnated at this sacred hour to destroy evil and restore righteousness.

As the announcement of his birth was made, the entire birthplace reverberated with chants of "Jai Shri Krishna".

The temple courtyard resounded with conch shells and cheers. At midnight, the temples echoed with the sound of bells, cymbals and conches, as the excitement of millions of devotees present on the premises reached its peak.

The atmosphere was filled with devotional music and chants of "Haathi Ghoda Palki, Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki" and "Nand Ke Ghar Anand Bhayo".
