Shimla, June 19 -- A massive landslide struck the barrage site of the 450 MW Shongtong Hydroelectric Power Project of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) in Kinnaur district on Friday morning, damaging parts of the structure under construction and triggering panic, officials said.
No casualties were reported as labourers at the site managed to escape to safety.
According to eyewitnesses, the construction work was in progress at the barrage site in Powari area of the district, when a large portion of the hillside suddenly developed cracks and collapsed, sending huge volumes of debris, rocks and uprooted trees crashing down onto the project site.
