Bengaluru, April 20 -- A sharp political controversy has erupted over the Centre's decision to link the implementation of the Women's Reservation Bill with the upcoming census and delimitation exercise, triggering a wider debate on women's political representation and the federal balance between states.

Senior Congress leader Margaret Alva on Monday alleged that the move to connect women's reservation with future demographic processes was "unscientific and politically motivated," arguing that it amounts to delaying a constitutional guarantee of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures.
