Ranchi, March 26 -- Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi on Thursday said that reservation benefits should reach only those for whom the constitutional provisions were originally intended, reacting to a Supreme Court ruling related to Scheduled Caste status after religious conversion.
Marandi said the apex court had clarified that a person who converts from Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism to another religion would not be entitled to Scheduled Caste status or related benefits.
He said if a person voluntarily leaves the social structure on which reservation entitlement is based, claiming benefits meant for that category would be contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.
