Imphal, April 17 -- The Manipur State Cabinet has approved the notification of Kharungpat in Kakching district as a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, marking a major step in the state's conservation efforts.

The decision comes in response to sustained public demand led by Usham Deben Singh, MLA with support from several local organisations and community bodies.

Officials of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF today said the proposed Kharungpat Bird Sanctuary will cover an area of about 227 hectares, accounting for roughly 6.7 per cent of the total wetland area. Officials said the wetland holds significant ecological value, particularly for water birds, including both resident and migratory species.
