Kolkata, May 4 -- In a stunning political upset in the heart of Kolkata, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee suffered a high-profile defeat in the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, losing to Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 15,105 votes.

Exactly five years after handing Banerjee a bitter loss in Nandigram, Adhikari has repeated the feat, this time in her home turf.

Bhabanipur - often described as a "Mini-India" for its diverse electorate - had been seen as a prestige contest, particularly as Banerjee resides in Kalighat, within the constituency, where she first started politics as a Youth Congress leader.

The contest in Bhabanipur witnessed dramatic swings throughout Monday's counting.
