Bengaluru, July 20 -- In a landmark judgment strengthening the rights of women to pursue higher education, the Karnataka High Court has ruled that an unmarried daughter who has attained majority can claim educational expenses for postgraduate studies from her father under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
Justice H.P. Sandesh held that the legal and moral obligation of a father to educate his daughter does not end when she turns 18, observing that parental responsibility extends to supporting an unmarried daughter in completing her higher education, including professional postgraduate courses.
