Mumbai, June 10 -- A boat carrying 50 to 60 devotees capsized in the Godavari River in Maharashtra's Beed district, near Majalgaon's Purushottampuri temple, on Wednesday resulting in two women being drowed, while dozens of other passengers were rescued to safety.
The accident occurred around 11:00 AM as the overcrowded vessel was ferrying devotees across the river to the shrine, officials said.
The shrine is the only temple in India dedicated to Lord Purushottam. The region has seen a massive surge in footfalls due to the holy Adhik Maas period.
The boat was carrying passengers well beyond its safe operating capacity, leading to it overturning midstream. One of the victims was identified as Pranila Sheshrao Rathod from Buldhana district....
