Mumbai, Aug. 21 -- In a stern push to enforce local language compliance, the Maharashtra Transport Department has launched a state-wide crackdown, issuing notices to 1,268 auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers for lacking adequate knowledge of Marathi.
The special inspection drive, which aims to ensure that transport operators in the state possess functional knowledge of Marathi, has gathered aggressive momentum across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and the rest of the state.
Authorities inspected 3,995 drivers, out of which 604 were found lacking sufficient conversational Marathi skills and were subsequently issued notices. Across other districts, 4,222 drivers were screened, leading to notices being served to 664 individuals. A total of ...
