Mumbai, March 9 -- The issue of dowry is set to be raised in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, drawing the attention of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to the continued prevalence of the practice despite it being a punishable offence under the law.

MLAs Jyoti Gaikwad, Amin Patel, Aslam Shaikh, Ramdas Masram and Sanjay Meshram have submitted an important Calling Attention Motion on the matter.

They pointed out that although accepting dowry is illegal, the practice still persists widely in villages, tribal settlements and cities. In many cases, people continue to demand or accept dowry in the form of cash, gold jewellery, two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
