Mumbai, July 9 -- The Maharashtra government on Thursday announced the constitution of a seven-member expert committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the state, marking a significant step towards legal reform.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement in the Legislative Assembly, stating that the move was in line with the Directive Principles of State Policy enshrined in the Constitution of India, which call upon the state to work towards securing a Uniform Civil Code for citizens.

The committee, comprising legal experts and policy specialists, has been given six months to conduct a comprehensive study of the legal, social and administrative aspects relevant to the implementation of a common civil law.
