MUMBAI, July 8 -- Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) General Secretary and Spokesperson Rakesh Shankar Shetty on Tuesday urged Maharashtra Chief Minister to visit Mulund immediately to witness the role of salt pans as natural flood barriers.
In a press statement issued here, Shetty said Mumbai, especially Mulund, faces severe threat from proposed development on ecologically sensitive salt pans.
He said salt pans have historically protected lakhs of residents from flooding by acting as a buffer between monsoon waters, high tides and the city.
The Congress leader opposed the proposal to construct buildings on 156 acres of salt pans to accommodate nearly 3 lakh people, calling it "dangerous and shortsighted".
