Nagpur, June 5 -- Maharashtra, despite being one of the country's leading economic hubs, remains among the worst-performing states in terms of sex ratio at birth, according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report.

The report showed that the state registered 899 girls for every 1,000 boys during the 2022-24 period, placing Maharashtra among the five lowest-ranked states nationwide.

The figure also remains below the national average of 918 girls per 1,000 boys.

The data underscores concerns that economic advancement and urban development have not necessarily translated into better gender indicators, with experts pointing to the continued prevalence of son preference and gaps in curbing sex-selective practices.
