Yavatmal, Aug. 4 -- : The agrarian crisis in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region continues to deepen, with Yavatmal district reporting 152 farmer suicides during the first six months of 2026, raising fresh concerns over the effectiveness of government welfare measures for farmers.
Official figures showed that the highest number of suicides were reported from the tehsils of Ralegaon, Maregaon, Darwha, Pusad, Mahagaon and Yavatmal, where agriculture is largely rain-fed.
Inadequate irrigation facilities, dependence on cotton and soybean cultivation and rising input costs have severely affected the financial condition of farmers in these areas.
Data indicated that most of the farmers who died by suicide were in the 30-50 age group.
