Mumbai, July 20 -- A 12-kg silver crown, estimated to be worth around Rs 50 lakh, was stolen from the Shivling at a historic Peshwa-era Shiva temple in Khopoli town of Maharashtra's Raigad district, police said on Monday.

According to police, unidentified miscreants broke into the temple and fled with the silver crown, triggering outrage among devotees and local residents.

The theft has raised questions over the security of the temple, despite the premises being equipped with CCTV surveillance cameras.

A case has been registered at Khopoli Police Station, and a special investigation team has been constituted under the supervision of Senior Police Inspector Sachin Hire to investigate the theft.
