Pune, Aug. 24 -- Renowned Marathi language scholar and grammarian, Dr Yasmin Sheikh, passed away due to age-related ailments at her residence here today.
She was 101.
Born on June 21, 1925, in Pen of Raigad district, Dr Sheikh made significant contributions to Marathi grammar, spelling, linguistics and proofreading. She remained actively engaged with the study and promotion of the Marathi language even at the age of 100.
Dr Sheikh was born as Jerusha John Ruben into a Jewish family. In 1950, she married Aziz Ahmed Ibrahim Sheikh of Nashik in an interfaith marriage. Following her marriage, she adopted the name Yasmin Sheikh, but did not change her religion.
