Mumbai, July 5 -- A potentially tragic outing at Maha Tourist to the scenic Zenith Waterfall in Khopoli, in the neighbouring Khalapur taluka, was averted on Sunday after more than 100 tourists were stranded by a sudden swell in the cascades and swiftly rescued by local villagers.
The district has been lashed by incessant rain over the past 48 hours, causing rivers and waterfalls to run high and treacherous. Notwithstanding official advisories, a considerable number of visitors had assembled at the popular Zenith Falls.
According to eyewitness accounts, the water volume rose abruptly while tourists were in the vicinity, leaving upwards of 100 people marooned amid the torrent.
