Kolhapur/Satara, July 30 -- With heavy rainfall in the catchment areas and water inflow into the dam, the six curved gates of Koyna Dam in Satara district, known as the lifeline of Maharashtra, were opened by one foot today, with 5,079 cusecs of water being released into the Koyna river basin through the gates.
Apart from this, 1,050 cusecs of water was released from one generator of the Koyna Paitha power house, making a total of 6,129 cusecs of water released into the Koyna river.
Due to the release of water, an alert has been issued to villages along the river.
This year, the lack of rain due to the El Nino effect in June had created an atmosphere of concern among farmers about water storage in Koyna dam and the kharif season.
