Hingoli, Aug. 11 -- A daily-wage worker in Hingoli city has reportedly received an electricity bill of a staggering Rs 2.18 lakh for two months despite using only a few basic appliances at her modest three-room house, raising questions over the functioning of smart metres being installed by the state power utility in Maharashtra.

The woman, Prabhavati Shravane, a resident of Siddharthnagar in Hingoli, said her household uses just three lights, two fans and a television. However, after a smart metre was installed in place of the old electricity metre, she was issued a bill amounting to Rs 2.18 lakh.
