Mumbai, Aug. 28 -- Environmental groups have made an unusual Raksha Bandhan appeal to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging the state government to protect DPS Lake and other wetlands in Navi Mumbai from encroachment and neglect and expedite their ecological restoration.

The appeal comes amid concerns over the deteriorating condition of the 12-hectare DPS Lake, which environmentalists said has virtually turned into an algae reservoir following the continued obstruction of intertidal water flow by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
