Mumbai, Sept. 11 -- A controversy has erupted in the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) in neighbouring Palghar district over allocation of works related to the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival, with BJP group leader Ashok Shelke urging the civic administration not to award such contracts to non-Hindu contractors.
In a letter addressed to the municipal commissioner, he demanded that various works required for the 10-day Ganesh festival be assigned only to Hindu contractors. He claimed that allowing non-Hindu contractors to undertake festival-related works would affect the religious sanctity of the Hindu festival.
