Lalu's silence on Ganga water treaty caused huge loss to Bihar, says JD(U); To urge Centre against renewal

Patna, Aug. 31 -- JD(U) state spokesperson Nihora Prasad Yadav today alleged that the silence of then Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav over the 1996 Ganga water treaty with Bangladesh caused a major loss to the state's interests. He said the JD(U) would strongly press the Centre against renewal of the treaty.

Yadav alleged that Lalu Prasad had compromised Bihar's interests for political considerations when the Farakka water-sharing treaty was signed in 1996 under the then United Front government at the Centre.

He said Lalu Prasad was Bihar Chief Minister at the time and held considerable influence in the central government, but did not raise his voice against the treaty despite its alleged adverse implications for the state.
