Srinagar, Aug. 20 -- In a major step towards water and agricultural security, Ladakh is turning its melting glaciers into a lifeline for its farms.
A massive 90 million litres of glacial water every day, once flowing unused into the Indus, is now being harnessed to irrigate thousands of acres of land.
The initiative, led by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, involves channelising glacial-melt water from Stok village Nallah in Leh into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal. The project is set to benefit nearly 12 villages and bring irrigation to more than 1,000 acres of land that previously remained barren and parched because of inadequate water supply.
