Thiruvananthapuram, June 18 -- Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced a major modernisation initiative for the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, including the recruitment of 1,000 Home Guards from among retired defence personnel to strengthen disaster response and public safety operations.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday after a review meeting with senior officials at the Fire and Rescue Services Headquarters, the minister said the retired personnel would be deployed for disaster management, traffic regulation and other emergency duties in view of the state's increasing disaster risks and growing public safety needs.
