Thiruvananthapuram, May 25 -- Kerala has intensified surveillance and public health preparedness measures following the declaration of a global public health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO) over the fast-spreading Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa.

The emergency declaration comes amid the rapid spread of the deadly "Bundibugyo" strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

The WHO, invoking the International Health Regulations (IHR-2005), warned on May 17 that the outbreak poses a serious international public health threat with potential cross-border transmission risks.
