Thrissur, March 22 -- Police has registered a case against BJP leader B Gopalakrishnan, who has been fielded as a party candidate, following his controversial "Hindu MLA" remark made in front of the Guruvayur temple.

The case was registered by Guruvayur temple police on the direction of Thrissur District Collector Sikha Surendran, acting on the directive of Chief Election Officer Rathan U Kelkar.

The action followed several complaints from political parties alleging violation of election norms.

The complaint stated that candidates are prohibited from seeking votes on the basis of religion or community sentiments and from using places of worship for campaign.
