Thiruvananthapuram, June 4 -- Renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan today raised serious concerns over the rapid degradation of Akkulam Lake and Vellayani Lake in Thiruvananthapuram, warning that the city's vital water bodies are being steadily destroyed due to encroachments and environmentally unsustainable development practices.

Speaking at an environmental discussion and book release programme held under the "Chandana Thanal" initiative at the Central Library of the Forest Department, Adoor said that Akkulam Lake has already lost much of its original expanse. According to him, continuous encroachments have reduced the lake's area to nearly one-fourth of what it once was.
