Bengaluru, July 17 -- The Karnataka High Court on Friday heard a constitutional challenge to the Greater Bengaluru Governance (GBG) Act, 2024, with petitioners arguing that the legislation strikes at the heart of urban local self-governance by stripping elected municipal bodies of their powers in violation of the 74th Constitutional Amendment.
Appearing before a division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Poonacha, counsel for the petitioners contended that the Act effectively reduces municipal institutions to "toothless" bodies and dismantles the constitutional scheme envisaged for democratic decentralisation.
