Bengaluru, June 8 -- With more than 60 Congress legislators reportedly vying for just 20 vacant ministerial positions, the party leadership in Karnataka finds itself walking a political tightrope as it prepares for the next phase of Cabinet expansion in the newly formed government headed by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

The scramble for Cabinet berths has emerged as the first major political challenge for the Congress government, with competing claims based on seniority, caste representation, regional balance, loyalty and factional affiliations threatening to complicate the selection process.

Following the swearing-in of 13 ministers in the first phase, attention has now shifted to the remaining vacancies.
