Meerut, Aug. 11 -- On the occasion of the Shravan Shivaratri festival on Tuesday, when millions of Kanwariyas complete their holy pilgrimage by offering sacred Ganga water (jalabhishek) to the Shivling, the Delhi-Doon Highway and the Kanwar route were painted saffron.
Shiva devotees returning from Haridwar with Ganga water have thronged the highways. Chants of "Har Har Mahadev" and "Bam Bam Bhole" were heard along the highway from morning until late at night. Those carrying the Kanwars on foot include children, young people, the elderly, and women. Many female Kanwariyas are seen traveling with small children.
Devotees of Shiva continuously carry Ganga water from Haridwar and head towards their villages and cities.
