Kolkata, July 13 -- A couple of days after the Ritabrata Banerjee faction of the Trinamool Congress announced that it had secured police permission to observe Martyrs' Day on July 21 at Mayo Road, the Kalighat faction on Monday moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the Kolkata Police's decision to prohibit public gatherings at the party's traditional venue outside Victoria House in Esplanade.

The Kalighat faction questioned why prohibitory orders banning the assembly of four or more persons had been imposed at Victoria House for nearly 60 days, a period that includes July 21, when the Trinamool Congress traditionally observes Martyrs' Day.
