Ranchi, June 9 -- Jharkhand Congress leaders on Tuesday paid tributes to tribal icon and freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his martyrdom day, recalling his contribution to the struggle against colonial rule and the protection of tribal rights.

State Congress president Keshav Mahato Kamlesh led party leaders in offering floral tributes at Birsa Munda's memorial at Kokar and later at a programme organised at Congress Bhavan in Ranchi.

Speaking on the occasion, Kamlesh said Birsa Munda launched the historic Ulgulan movement against the exploitative policies of the British and fought for the rights, identity and self-respect of tribal communities.
