New Delhi, April 3 -- The Jan Vishwas Bill, passed in the recent Budget session of Parliament, removes jail terms for cosmetic labelling and documentation lapses while raising penalties for manufacturers and sellers to up to Rs 5 lakh.
The Bill amended the penalties imposed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, for any violations other than manufacturing or selling fake or contaminated cosmetics items, including creams, lotions, and any make-up items.
The notification states that manufacturing, selling, storing, displaying, or even offering to sell cosmetics that fail to meet legal standards will invite a penalty of Rs 1 lakh or three times the value of the seized stock, whichever is higher.
