New Delhi, Aug. 18 -- Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday accused the Modi government of deliberately undermining the proposed caste census, questioning why Census 2027 does not include a "drop down menu" for caste enumeration that the government itself had recommended in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court in 2021.

In a post on social media platform X, Ramesh recalled that on September 21, 2021, the Modi government had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court categorically opposing a plea seeking a caste census. However, he pointed to Para 12(d) of the affidavit, which acknowledged the importance of creating a standardised caste registry.
