Chennai, June 10 -- Tamil film fraternity lost one of its most transformative storytellers and an auteur who redefined the grammar of Tamil cinema, as veteran director and actor Bharathiraja passed away in the early hours of Wednesday due to age-related health complications.

He was 84.

He is survived by his wife, who rushed from his native Theni district on hearing about his death, and daughter, who was coming from Malaysia, and grand children.

A six-time National Award winner and an auteur who redefined the grammar of Tamil cinema, Bharathiraja had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments over the past few months and had been under medical observation at his Neelankarai residence and stayed away from public appearance.
