Ranchi, Aug. 25 -- Jharkhand has identified 2,119 potential wetlands across the state based on an ISRO atlas, with Chief Minister Hemant Soren directing officials to verify, demarcate and notify them for protection and scientific management.

The decision was taken at the first meeting of the Jharkhand State Wetland Authority chaired by Soren on Tuesday.

Officials said the identified wetlands would undergo physical and factual verification at the district level before their demarcation and notification.

The Chief Minister also directed officials to prepare an updated inventory and digital database of wetlands and monitor encroachment and activities that could damage them.
