Jerusalem, Aug. 4 -- Israel resumed airstrikes in Gaza, mere hours after senior officials from the US-backed Board of Peace met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem in an effort to secure Israeli support for a phased plan to disarm Hamas.

According to Palestinian reports, an Israeli strike on the Sheikh Ajlin neighbourhood of Gaza City on Monday killed two people. It was the first reported airstrike in nearly 24 hours, after a brief lull that had prompted speculation that progress had been made in persuading Israel to suspend military operations while negotiations continued.
