Tehran, June 2 -- Iran's powerful theocratic guard, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday that 24 vessels had safely transited the Strait of Hormuz in the past 24 hours after coordinating with its naval forces, amid Tehran's attempts to enforce a new approval system for ships using the strategic waterway.
According to the IRGC Navy, all the vessels were permitted to pass after "obtaining authorisation and coordinating with the force".
The Islamic Republic has recently introduced a new system which will require all vessels headed to the strait to seek prior approval before entering, with Tehran also charging ships what it calls "service fees" related to navigation, security and maritime management.
