New Delhi, July 14 -- India on Tuesday lodged a strong protest with Iran after attacks on two commercial vessels carrying Indian crew transiting the Strait of Hormuz left one Indian seafarer dead and 10 others injured.

New Delhi called the strikes a serious threat to maritime safety and freedom of navigation and urged an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue in the region.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi was summoned and a "strong protest" was lodged over the attacks on the MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which together carried 30 Indian crew members among a combined crew of 46.
