New Delhi, July 2 -- India's coal imports declined nearly 13 per cent year-on-year in April 2026 as higher domestic production and improved availability reduced reliance on overseas supplies, while output from captive and commercial mines continued to grow, according to data released by the Ministry of Coal on Thursday.
Total coal imports fell to 21.13 million tonnes (MT) in April from 24.27 MT in the same month last year, a decline of 3.14 MT or 12.95 per cent.
The sharpest reduction was recorded in imports by the power sector, which dropped 24.89 per cent to 3.51 MT from 4.67 MT a year ago. The ministry attributed the decline to improved domestic coal linkages and reduced dependence on imported coal for blending.
