Bhubaneswar, July 11 -- Hydrogen could emerge as an alternative to coke in steelmaking as India seeks to nearly double its annual steel production capacity from the present 160 million tonnes to about 300 million tonnes over the next four to five years, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Chairman and Managing Director Dr Ashok Kumar Panda said on Saturday.
Addressing the two-day Second Technology Conclave organised by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) at SOA Deemed to be University here, Panda stressed the need to develop indigenous steelmaking technology to reduce pollution and carbon emissions.
