Chennai, Sept. 1 -- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Tuesday opened the sluice gates of the Mettur dam and released waters for irrigation, bringing a huge relief for farmers in the Cauvery delta districts to take up Samba and Thaladi crop cultivation despite beinghit by the delayed Kuruvai crop cultivation.

Due to steady inflow following release of surplus waters from Karnataka reservoirs, the water level in the Mettur dam, the lifeline of farmers in Cauvery delta districts, has crossed the 90 ft mark three days back and the storage level as on today morning stood at 91.56 ft (54.45 million cubic feet) as against the full storage level of 120 ft (93.47 million cubic feet).
