Shimla, Aug. 24 -- Himachal Pradesh's 14 jails are housing nearly 30 per cent more inmates than their sanctioned capacity, with 3,355 prisoners currently lodged against an overall capacity of 2,580, the state government informed the Assembly on Monday.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu provided the information in a written reply to a question raised by Congress MLA Kewal Singh Pathania during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
According to the government, of the 3,355 inmates lodged in different jails, 1,113 are convicted prisoners, 2,203 are undertrials and 39 are being held under civil or preventive detention provisions.
The figures indicate that undertrial prisoners constitute the largest category of inmates in the State's prisons.
