Kolkata, Aug. 29 -- West Bengal Health Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sharadwat Mukherjee on Saturday clarified his remarks on body donation, saying he had never discouraged people from donating their bodies and was referring specifically to cases of brain death, where he said organ donation should take precedence.
Mukherjee had earlier sparked confusion by questioning the usefulness of whole-body donation and urging people to donate their organs instead. Referring to former chief minister Jyoti Basu, he had said his body donation had served no particular purpose.
The remarks had unsettled people who had already pledged to donate their bodies for medical education and research.
