Nagpur, Sept. 7 -- : The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to a 26-year-old man who was unlawfully detained by the police, observing that the action violated his fundamental rights and undermined public confidence in the justice system.
A division bench comprising Justices Urmila Joshi-Phalke and Raj Wakode, in its judgment delivered on August 31, held that the Akola police had acted illegally in detaining petitioner Vaibhav Suryawanshi.
While passing the order, the court underscored that officials entrusted with enforcing criminal law have responsibilities not only towards an accused person but also towards the State and society.
