Mumbai, June 23 -- The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the Maharashtra government to present an action plan outlining exactly how the state will deliver clean, potable drinking water to the last person in every village.
A division bench explicitly stated: " Access to clean drinking water is not a discretionary welfare measure, but rather a fundamental right tied directly to the right to life (Article 21 of the Indian Constitution)."The bench of Justice A.S. Gadkari and Justice Kamal Khate made this observation during the hearing of petitions related to malnutrition-related deaths and the lack of basic amenities among tribal communities in the Melghat and Dharni regions of the Amravati district.
