Neeraj BaliChandigarh, Aug. 29 -- Haryana's prison system is functioning with barely half of its sanctioned workforce, with more than 2,300 posts vacant and some of the most critical medical and mental-health positions inside jails having no staff at all.

The biggest gap is at the frontline. Against 3,010 sanctioned posts for male warders, Haryana's prisons have only 1,583 personnel in position, leaving 1,427 posts vacant. Among female warders, 116 of the 179 sanctioned posts are unfilled.

The shortage becomes more striking inside prison hospitals.

Only three male Medical Officers are working against 37 sanctioned posts across the Jails Department. Of 18 sanctioned Lady Medical Officer posts, 17 are vacant.
