New Delhi, March 10 -- The Central government on Tuesday invoked the Essential Commodities Act 1955 after assessing that the current ongoing conflict in West Asia, resulting in disruption of liquefied natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, an official order of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said.
The 'Essential Commodities Act 1955' ensures timely supply of essential goods such as food, fuel and medicines to consumers at reasonable prices. It empowers the government to regulate production, distribution, and storage to prevent hoarding and blackmarketing.
