New Delhi, July 29 -- The government on Wednesday introduced the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha, proposing a tougher legal framework for the delayed registration of births and deaths by mandating stricter verification procedures and shifting the approval process for long-pending cases from the executive to the judiciary.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai moved the Bill for introduction after seeking the permission of the House. The legislation seeks to amend the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, with the objective of strengthening the integrity and credibility of the country's civil registration system.
