Aizawl, Sept. 10 -- A four-state project backed by India and Germany aims to restore the Barak River's degraded catchments, tackle flooding and landslides and strengthen livelihoods dependent on the river's natural resources.

The project, titled "Conservation & Restoration of Catchment Areas of Barak River in the States of Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland", was discussed at a meeting in Serchhip on Thursday, where officials examined measures to conserve the river and its tributaries.

The initiative is being jointly funded by the Government of India and KfW, Germany, with the North Eastern Council (NEC) as the implementing agency and the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMS) as the executing agency.
